Perfect jacket for Autumn…or for rainy Spring days in Spain

I’ve been hunting for a nice easy but stylish jacket pattern.

This spring I made a toile version of this Butterick pattern, B5927 – simply unlined, pocketless, and made using some home dec fabric that seemed the correct weight for the project. This was just meant to be a test for “fit” (not much of a stretch since it’s a boxy design, but mainly to check the shoulder/back fit). I made no fitting alterations to this pattern.

I brought the toile version with me to Spain in May and wore it nearly every day of the trip! The style worked with all combo of bottoms – wide pants or skinnies, short or long skirts (full or pencil!). As I look back at my Spain photos, I did wear it with skinny Gingers most!

Once I realized how versatile this jacket was, I decided to make my “real” version in a darker fabric for Fall. I’m a sucker for windowpane plaid, so when I saw it an JoAnns in this dark navy heavy suiting, I hoped it would be perfect…and it was! The weight is perfect for the little stand-up collar, and it’s a great weight when lined for fall and spring.

For this version I used primarily View B, but I didn’t want the pockets, so I created just one continuous piece for each the fronts (without the pocket there was no need for a seam at the waist), and I did the same for the sleeves – I omitted the bottom cuff piece. {OK full confession: I convinced myself I didn’t need the pockets and the cuffs because pattern matching really stresses me out!}

I really love how this turned out, and my girls are each requesting one for Christmas this year!

Final note: do you have one of these little remote clickers for taking iPhone pics? So easy! I kept seeing sewists with them on IG and I looked into it…best $8 I ever spent 🙂
